Technology
To create security photopolymer holograms, special materials and technologies are required to protect their bright colors and stable visual effects during the production of the security element and applying it into banknotes or ID cards. 3D-Gram® holograms use the ultrathin photopolymer from Covestro, a world-leading supplier of polymer materials.
The case study about the technical tasks in the development of 3D-Gram® elements, solved by the experts from KRYPTEN and Covestro is published on the website of our partners.
Security Effects
A hologram is originated in the inner polymer layer and recorded from real objects. That is why images have a 3D effect and look realistic.
Photopolymer elements are made on a transparent base. It ensures image visibility under the security feature.
3D-Gram® technology creates elements with different optical effects: parallax effect, flip-flop effect of colours and images, shimmer effect, micro-lenses with kinetic effect, or micro-texts. Familiar holographic effects become more distinct with the stable colour of the image.
3D-Gram® holograms are available in red, green, or blue colour, or their combinations.
Application
3D-Gram® technology is implemented in the form of a photopolymer stripe for banknotes, photopolymer holographic patch, laminate, and inlay for plastic IDs.

Hologram with AR technology
Holographic Effects and Smart-HIT® Covert Features
The dragon and the arch are made using high-precision micro-demetallisation technology. The hologram optical effects attract the user’s attention to the element and point to the Smart-HIT™ covert features hidden within the arch. Smart-HIT® covert effects become visible in the polarised light of a smartphone. Just place the element on the screen of the turned-on smartphone to reveal the dark images of the dragon and the mountain. Additional security effects are also visible when the hologram is turned 90° with the images changing from positive to negative.
AR Objects
The final stage of the element verification is visualisation of a virtual dragon using a mobile app. The augmented reality technology reproduces a realistic interactive 3D object on the hologram.
Application
Interactive security features involve the user in an active process of product verification, enhance user engagement experience and increase awareness of security features. In addition, AR technology makes it possible to create virtual instructions for convenient navigation through the security features of the product.

Smart-HIT® technology utilises the principle of polarised images. Smart-HIT® security elements are reproduced on a transparent base and contain covert optical effects. They are not visible under normal ambient lighting conditions but appear under polarised light from a smartphone screen. When placing the element on the screen of a smartphone and enabling the Smart-HIT mobile app, dynamic colour effects are visualised.
Smart-HIT™ covert images
Security effects
Smart-HIT® technology is represented by elements with different optical effects, namely Smart-HIT-CH® element with colour changing effect, two-sided Smart-HIT-RE® element, and Smart-HIT-Dynamic™ element with animation effect.
Smart-HIT-CH® covert image becomes colourful in polarised light from a smartphone and changes colours when rotating the element. The two-sided Smart-HIT-RE® element reveals different images on the front and back sides of the element. Image changing (flip-flop) and rainbow effects are observed when turning the element. The mobile app activates covert dynamic effects in the Smart-HIT-Dynamic® element.
Application
Smart-HIT® elements are used for banknotes and documents with transparent windows. They may be used independently or in combination with other overt optical features attracting the user’s attention to the element and ensure extra security. Smart-HIT® elements are compatible with photopolymer and reflection holograms. They may be combined with printing elements, paint coating, and selective application of demetallised rainbow hologram.
JoStick™ security element is created specifically for ID cards. The technology of manufacture and application of JoStick™ element to an ID card excludes the possibility to counterfeit layer with personal data without damaging the security element. JoStick® holographic patch for window ID cards
Technology
The hologram is made using high precision micro-demetallization. The technology reproduces clear, thin metallized lines of less than 100 microns. To create the image, two contrasting metals are used - copper and nickel. The finest lines made in one metal are combined with extreme precision with lines of metal of a different color. As a result, bimetallic patterns are formed. The copper lines of the guilloche grids are precisely joined with the silver.
Between the metallized lines there are large transparent areas that do not impede the visibility of the document under the security element. Additionally, another holographic image is reproduced on the element which clearly visible in the transparent areas between the lines.
Security Effects
BiMetal technology creates vibrant bimetal patterns. The contrast of copper-silver colours is quickly understood by the user. It is easy to remember and visualize. The dynamic rainbow effects on the image enhance the security features of the element. To produce such bimetallised patterns is possible only using special optical technologies and equipment. Sophisticated technology and easy identification of the BiMetal element provide reliable anti-counterfeiting security for banknotes and documents.
